Technology creates and delivers cures faster than viruses can spread
Stockholm den 13 oktober 1999 -
Symantec Corporation (NASDAQ: SYMC) today announced that Scan and Deliver, a component of Norton AntiVirus, now includes automated macro virus analysis and repair technology jointly developed by Symantec and IBM. This new technology will enhance Symantec AntiVirus Research Automation (SARA) by enabling virus cures to be created and delivered faster than the malicious code can spread in many cases.
"Norton AntiVirus is not only the most comprehensive anti-virus solution available, but with this new technology, it is also the fastest at deploying widespread cures," said Enrique Salem, vice president of Symantec's Security and Assistance Business Unit. "This automated technology is just another way we are addressing the increasingly complex needs of the Internet environment."
Scan and Deliver technology, first introduced in version 5.0 of Norton AntiVirus, gave users the ability to use the Internet to send suspicious files to the Symantec AntiVirus Research Center (SARC) for analysis and repair. Since then, Scan and Deliver has successfully and quickly responded to an exponential increase in submissions of suspicious files. By including new, next-generation automation technology from Symantec and IBM, Scan and Deliver is able to speed repair to users in significantly less time.
Traditional anti-virus companies require a human analyst to manually examine each new potential virus submission: researchers try to replicate the sample on an isolated test computer, analyze the characteristics of the virus, produce a cure and then test the cure. By involving humans in this process, response time is significantly longer, potentially allowing the virus to spread further and cause significant damage. In contrast, the next generation Scan and Deliver System utilizes patented computer systems to completely respond to a majority of common virus submissions. This reduces response time, increases reliability and enables Symantec to develop and spread the cure faster than the virus can spread itself in many instances.
Upon receiving a new macro virus from a user, the Scan and Deliver automated macro virus analysis and repair system replicates the virus. It then automatically creates a virus definition, tests the repair on real infections, and, if the repair succeeds, adds the virus definition to SARC's database and deploys the fix to customers all without human intervention. Symantec estimates that up to 70 percent of submissions to SARC will be handled by the automated system, thereby resulting in unparalleled speed in responding to virus outbreaks that can result in downtime, lost user productivity, and compromised security.
