Symantec and Network Appliance Give Customers Reliable Data Protection and Rapid System Recovery to Ensure Information Availability

Symantec LiveState Recovery Protects and Recovers Windows Data Stored on NetApp® IP SAN Storage and Performs Bare Metal Recovery of Critical Windows Servers

TORONTO, ON - October 26, 2004 - Symantec Corp. (NASDAQ: SYMC), the global leader in information security, today announced at Storage Networking World in Orlando the expansion of its strategic security partnership with Network Appliance, Inc. (NASDAQ: NTAP) to include storage availability that will benefit Windows customers by providing fast system and data protection and recovery. Symantec LiveState Recovery Advanced Server 3.0, Symantec's disk-based system and data recovery solution, has been validated to be interoperable with NetApp enterprise IP SAN storage systems. This allows Windows customers to recover data stored on NetApp iSCSI volumes in a fraction of the time required for alternative tape-based recovery solutions. In addition, Symantec LiveState Recovery Advanced Server 3.0 can store any Windows boot volume on the cost-effective NetApp networked storage, allowing companies to do bare-metal recovery of critical Windows servers without the time-consuming, labor-intensive process of file-based tape recovery solutions.

"The combination of Symantec's rapid and reliable system and data recovery solution with our powerful and cost-effective storage systems provides customers with stellar levels of data protection and recovery for their most important data," says Patrick Rogers, vice president of Solution and Alliance Marketing at Network Appliance. "The expansion of this partnership means businesses have more dependable and secure backup and restore processes for their Windows environments."

Utilizing Symantec LiveState Recovery Advanced Server 3.0 and NetApp enterprise storage, customers have an industry-leading recovery solution. Symantec LiveState Recovery has unique functionality to leverage the speed of the iSCSI network to back up Windows servers and desktops to the NetApp storage systems. Symantec LiveState Recovery also takes an image of any Windows server OS volume and stores it on the NetApp storage system - either on an iSCSI volume or a normal network file system mounted drive. Users can then perform a bare metal recovery of the Windows server in minutes in the event of a disaster to ensure information availability to the organization.

"Customers today need real solutions to address their expanding storage needs and recovery time objectives," says Dieter Giesbrecht, senior vice president and general manager, enterprise administration, Symantec Corporation. "Symantec and NetApp address the critical issues of performance, simplicity, and reliability to ensure comprehensive system and data protection and recovery with this expanded partnership." LiveState Recovery can help Windows customers leverage their NetApp IP-SAN and NetApp unified storage system investments to improve the overall resiliency of their IT infrastructure. For example, customers who subscribe to a security early warning solution like Symantec DeepSight Alert Services can act upon this threat insight to increase the frequency of their LiveState Recovery backups during periods of high alert and achieve a more resilient enterprise computing environment.

Symantec LiveState Recovery products capture a point-in-time operating state, or a live state, of an entire Windows server, which includes the operating system, applications, data, and settings into one easy-to-manage file. These point-in-time snapshots are created hot without interrupting user productivity or application usage. Users can perform a full system restoration, a complete bare metal recovery or retrieve individual files or folders in minutes avoiding the hours it usually takes to manually rebuild Windows servers and workstations and restore data from conventional backup. Symantec Corporation, the leader in information security, and NetApp, the leader in advanced storage solutions, formed a strategic relationship to provide customers with Symantec's industry-leading technologies to defend against attacks that can threaten their storage solutions and infrastructure based on NetApp unified storage systems and NetApp NetCache® systems. In addition, Symantec protects customers' valuable data stored on NetApp unified systems from attempted intrusions and attacks using Symantec ManHunt. Symantec also protects NetApp systems that are monitored by its enterprise-class firewall and integrated security technologies with Symantec Enterprise Firewall and Symantec Gateway Security.
