Symantec Expands Lead as World's Largest Security Software Provider

TORONTO, ON. - November 11, 2002 - Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC) today announced that a new Gartner Dataquest report* reflects Symantec's continued position as the world's leading security software provider based on new license revenue and market share in 2001. The report showed that Symantec's market share of the worldwide security industry increased from 14.7 percent in 2000 to 21 percent in 2001, leading the list of the world's top 21 security software vendors. The growth of Symantec's market share was underscored by the expansion of its lead over the second-place company from 1 percentage point in 2000 to seven percentage points in 2001.

According to the "2001 Security Software Market Share" report, Symantec continued to lead the antivirus market, the largest segment of the security software industry, with a 50 percent share of the combined enterprise and consumer business, more than double the nearest competitor. The report also showed Symantec with the largest growth rate in the intrusion detection market, the fastest growing segment of the security software industry worldwide, at 167 percent.

"Symantec continues to strengthen its position as the world leader in the security software industry as more and more companies embrace our integrated approach to Internet security for the protection of their networks," said John Schwarz, president and chief operating officer, Symantec. "Recent blended attacks such as Bugbear and the denial of service assault on the Internet backbone underscore the need for a holistic approach to security at all levels of a network. The integration of diverse security products at the gateway, server and client levels and the combination of an open, standards-based security management solution with unsurpassed alert services will further accelerate Symantec's penetration of the enterprise security market." According to the report, Symantec's year-over-year growth rate of 34 percent more than tripled the growth rate of the security software industry as a whole, which came in at 10 percent. Symantec's growth rate of 36 percent in the antivirus segment topped the overall growth rate of 27 percent for the antivirus market worldwide.

Regionally, the report listed Symantec with 22 percent market share in the United States, 34 percent in Canada, 20 percent in Japan, 16 percent in Europe, and 17 percent in Asia/Pacific. In addition, Symantec had the largest growth rate of any pure play security company in Europe at 40 percent and the second largest growth rate in Asia/Pacific at 61 percent.

Security software, according to Gartner Dataquest, includes antivirus, encryption, intrusion detection and other security such as firewall, web content security and extranet access management.
