Symantec to Develop First Enterprise-Level Firewall for IBM eServer iSeries Linux Offering

CUPERTINO, Calif. - April 15, 2002 - Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC), a world leader in Internet security, today announced it has plans to develop the first enterprise-level, full-application inspection proxy firewall available for the IBM eServer iSeries Linux offering. Symantec Enterprise Firewall for IBM eServer iSeries for Linux will combine Symantec's award-winning firewall solution with IBM's midmarket mainframe, the eServer iSeries.

Symantec Enterprise Firewall's security architecture minimizes vulnerabilities and delivers full-featured security, ensuring complete control of information entering and leaving the iSeries enterprise environment.

"iSeries customers are increasingly extending the capabilities of their servers to take advantage of emerging e-business and Web technologies," said Per Larsen, vice president of eServer solutions for IBM. "Incorporating a firewall solution such as Symantec's Enterprise Firewall for iSeries on Linux directly on the server can provide additional security, confidence and centralized management."

Complex Internet threats require firewall technologies to be more sophisticated than those offered by traditional stateful inspection firewalls. Recognized for its superior protection against blended threats, such as Code Red and Nimda, Symantec Enterprise Firewall provides advanced full-application inspection engines and automated system hardening to further protect corporate networks from these types of attacks.

"Symantec Enterprise Firewall for the IBM eServer iSeries Linux offering will provide iSeries customers with the highest level of security to protect their core business and e-business applications from unwanted intrusions," said Greg Gotta, vice president, engineering, Symantec Corporation. "Symantec Enterprise Firewall is easy to configure, manage, and maintain through an intuitive interface. In addition, administrators can manage security policies from a central console for both local and remote firewalls, and obtain a variety of security logs and management reports."

Symantec Enterprise Firewall is a key part of Symantec Enterprise Security, which provides any size organization with the technology, global response and services necessary to manage its information security. Symantec's comprehensive solution offers best-of-breed products to protect gateways, servers, and clients with firewall security, virus protection, intrusion detection, vulnerability management and virtual private networking (VPN).

Customers benefit from Symantec's global network of researchers that provide customers with around-the-clock, immediate response to any new security-related attacks. Symantec Enterprise Security customers are also supported by one of the largest professional security organizations in the world, offering security consulting, security education and managed security services.
