Symantec Announces Comprehensive and Flexible Virus Protection for Lotus Notes/Domino Databases

TORONTO, Ont. - Jan. 29, 2002 - Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC), the world leader in Internet security, today announced an array of antivirus products for Lotus Notes and Domino servers at IBM's Lotusphere in Orlando, Florida. Symantec AntiVirus 2.5 for Lotus Notes/Domino is designed to provide administrators with comprehensive, automatic protection against today's complex blended threats. In addition, administrators will soon be able to define alerting rules and actions in the event of an email virus outbreak using the Outbreak Notification feature of Symantec AntiVirus/Filtering 3.0 for Domino.

"Symantec's AntiVirus and Filtering for Domino has eased the burden of IT administration both internally and at our client sites," said Joseph A. Pierlussi, President, Data Constructs Company. "The solution is easy to install and manage, and provides the well documented notification of Internet security threats that we need."

Symantec's Antivirus Solutions for Lotus Notes/Domino
Symantec AntiVirus 2.5 for Lotus Notes/Domino provides reliability and virus scanning efficiency, as well as comprehensive protection and management ease with minimal performance impact. Because all operations are completed in native Notes format, the product is easy to use and manage. Administrators now have the flexibility to configure protection either locally or remotely on the Solaris, AIX, AS/400 and OS/390 platforms. In addition, administrators can set different configurations for various servers; choose real-time, on-demand, or scheduled scanning; and are able to repair, quarantine, and delete infected files.

Symantec AntiVirus 2.5 for Lotus Notes/Domino uses heuristics technology to detect and protect against macro and file viruses. LiveUpdate software lets administrators download the latest virus definitions and deploy them throughout the Notes environment from one location without having to re-install software, dramatically reducing cost of ownership. Using LiveUpdate, administrators can download definitions from internal FTP sites or file servers. The solution also includes malicious code scanning, improved reporting, remote management capability and automatic, centralized updates.

Symantec's Integrated Antivirus and Filtering Solution for Domino
Symantec AntiVirus/Filtering 3.0 for Domino, initially available on the NT and Windows 2000 platforms, will integrate antivirus protection with content filtering. This product is planned to provide the same comprehensive protection offered by Symantec AntiVirus 2.5 for Lotus Notes/Domino, as well as information and bandwidth management using Symantec's patented Dynamic Document Review (DDR). Another key feature planned is the heuristic-based Outbreak Notification, which defines outbreak rules to set up alerts and actions when there is either an email virus outbreak occurring, or there is a reasonable suspicion that one is occurring.

Symantec's content filtering provides comprehensive, policy-based scanning to protect organizations against offensive or undesirable content. With out-of-the-box functionality, this feature will also help ensure that only approved attachments and desired content enter or leave the network, improving user productivity and preserving network bandwidth. In addition, an easy-to-use interface is planned to allow administrators to filter or block email messages by subject line, attachment, message size, sender or domain.

An additional key new feature expected to be included in Symantec AntiVirus/Filtering 3.0 for Domino is Server Group Management which creates a virtual group of servers allowing the administrator to develop a single settings document for all servers in that group. The planned Trusted Server feature improves performance by not scanning messages that come from "trusted" servers -- servers that have e already performed a scan on the incoming message. In addition to the well-known benefits of content filtering, these features will allow the administrator to take action in an outbreak situation, even before new virus definitions have arrived.
