News Release

Symantec To Integrate Both Content Filtering And Anti-Virus Solution Into Inktomi Traffic Server Network Cache Platform

TORONTO, Ont. - Nov. 8, 2000 - Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC), a worldwide leader in Internet security, today announced that it expects to release I-Gear™ for Inktomi Traffic Server, featuring Symantec's carrier-grade anti-virus solution, by the end of the month. Internet service providers and enterprise customers who run I-Gear on the Inktomi® Traffic Server® network cache platform will soon be able to offer their home and business computer users a clean, safe pipeline to the Internet. I-Gear's Web filtering and anti-virus plug-ins will present service providers with new opportunities for differentiation, while offering enterprises better management and control of their networks.

I-Gear™ for Inktomi Traffic Server containing Symantec AntiVirus™ would be the first comprehensive, server-based product to combine patented Web content filtering technology with carrier-class anti-virus scanning technology. I-Gear will work between the user and the Internet and will scan all HTTP and FTP traffic for both objectionable content and malicious virus threats to provide comprehensive content security.

"We expect I-Gear will be the first set of integrated plug-ins to offer both content filtering and carrier-class anti-virus protection," said Gary Warren, senior vice president of the Service Provider Solutions Division of Symantec. "This product will give Internet service providers an exciting new value-added service, helping them to stand out in a highly competitive marketplace. I-Gear will also offer enterprise customers the chance to maximize productivity while increasing network security."

"Traffic Server network cache provides an open, extensible platform for next-generation Internet services, and the availability of integrated Web filtering and antivirus technology from Symantec will provide Inktomi customers with a powerful new value-added service offering to enable more efficient network operations," said Roxanne Ivory, senior director product marketing, Network Products Division at Inktomi. "Inktomi and Symantec are both strongly committed to the ISP and enterprise markets and I-Gear is proof of that commitment."

When released, I-Gear™ for Inktomi Traffic Server will contain the carrier-grade Symantec AntiVirus™ component, which reviews Web documents as they are downloaded to detect and repair destructive viruses before they can inflict damage on an organization's network. Symantec AntiVirus™ detects viruses, worms, and Trojan Horses in all of the major file types, such as Windows files, DOS files, Word, and Excel documents, and in various compressed file formats, such as ZIP, LZH, ARJ, and ARC.

I-Gear also features a Web filtering component that uses a unique combination of completely customizable list-based and context sensitive filtering protection to control access to Internet sites. I-Gear includes 23 predefined Content Category Lists, which include topics such as pornography, games, job search, news and current events, crime, and violence. These lists are reviewed and updated daily.

Symantec's Dynamic Document Review™ takes content filtering one step further by reviewing Web text in real time as it is downloaded from the Internet. This patented, context sensitive, multilingual technology actually analyzes word relationships, not just key words, to make sure that Web sites are not inappropriately screened out. This extra level of protection allows customers complete confidence in using search engines, anthology sites, and pages that have not yet been categorized.

I-Gear features hierarchical administrative levels for managing content filtering, which allows Internet service providers to delegate management of individual family member accounts to a head of household. Likewise, businesses will be able to delegate control of certain employee accounts to individual managers, without releasing full administrative control of I-Gear.

I-Gear for Inktomi Traffic Server is planned to be available for both Sun Solaris and Microsoft Windows NT and is being developed to integrate seamlessly with Traffic Server software, the industry's leading network cache platform. Inktomi's software is designed for use by global enterprises, media companies and service providers in the Internet access, backbone, broadband, hosting and content markets. The Traffic Server platform is the only product available today designed to scale beyond a terabyte of data, making it the world's highest performance and most scalable network cache.
