News Release

Symantec and Freeinternet.com Enter Into Strategic Distribution Agreement to Promote Internet Security

Symantec Software to be Included on 100 Million Freeinternet.com CDs

Cupertino, CA - Aug. 2, 2000 - Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC) today announced that freeinternet.com, the global leader in providing 100 percent free and anonymous Internet service, has chosen Symantec's award-winning Norton Internet Security and Norton Utilities software as the security standard for freei's SM 2.2 million registered users. Additionally, Symantec has agreed to bundle and distribute free Internet access from freei with selected Symantec software.

In the first step of their new relationship, Symantec will provide trialware versions of its market-leading Internet security, personal firewall and diagnostic software on more than 100 million freeinternet.com CD-ROMs distributed throughout North America. Freei users will have additional opportunities to download Symantec software through the freei Web site portal page and within the "Technology" and "Cool Extras" Web channels.

"Freeinternet.com is committed to maintaining a high-quality, secure environment for our users," said Bob McCausland, president and CEO of freeinternet.com. "With Symantec's solutions, we are offering our customers the best protection in the industry."

"Symantec's service provider partnerships are key to our strategy to deliver our best-of-breed security solutions to consumers, using the Internet as the channel," said Gary Warren, senior vice president of Business Development at Symantec. "As the number of people connected to the Internet continues to grow at an exponential pace, we hope that the availability of solutions like Norton Internet Security and Norton Utilities will set the standard for Internet security."

Norton Internet Security safeguards confidential files, protects unauthorized users from inappropriate Internet content and includes the award-winning Norton AntiVirus. In addition, Symantec's firewall technology offers protection from hacker infiltration, provides customized privacy settings and protects the user from browser cookies that collect the user's personal information when accessing Internet sites.

Norton Utilities simplifies the critical but often complex task of finding, fixing, and repairing computer problems. By providing crash protection, registry repair and optimization, disaster recovery, and more in a comprehensive yet simple package, Norton Utilities enables users to be sure their PCs are running at peak performance levels. The addition of Windows hardware diagnostics to Norton Utilities gives users the ability to quickly check the health of their entire PC systems-including speakers, CD-ROMs, memory, printers, modems, and more with a single mouse click.
