Symantec Appoints Cress Carter to Head U.S. Corporate Sales and Marketing

Group to Focus on Security Solutions for Enterprise Customers

CUPERTINO, Calif. - April 20, 2000 - Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC) today announced the appointment of Cress Carter as vice president of U.S. Corporate Sales and Marketing, which is responsible for enterprise customers in the commercial, government, and education sectors. Carter was formerly president of L-3 Network Security, which was acquired by Symantec in March.

"Enterprise customers are looking for a trusted partner to help plan and implement sustainable security policies and safeguards," said John W. Thompson, Symantec chairman, president and CEO. "Carter's enterprise experience will be a valuable asset in bringing our solutions, services and channel partners together to focus on solving security issues for our customers."

The Corporate Sales and Marketing group will work closely with Symantec's Professional Services team and channel partners to help customers assess the business risks associated with their computer networks, develop sound security policies to reduce those risks, and implement and maintain cost-effective security solutions.

As a founder of L-3 Network Security, Carter oversaw the development of the company's risk assessment and vulnerability management technologies, which are now part of Symantec's operational security offering. Carter has also worked closely with CIOs in the United States and Europe to understand enterprise security needs.

Carter joined Symantec after more than 16 years' experience in information security and sales and marketing, including heading up the security products group for Trident Data Systems. Prior to that, Carter ran the world-wide sales, channels, marketing and services organisation for nView Corp. and Hughs-JVC Technology Corp. Carter holds a master of business administration degree in marketing and technology management from the University of Virginia.
