Symantec Introduces First Utility to Completely Optimize Windows NT Volumes Online
Easy to Administer via Centralized Management Console, Norton Speed Disk for Windows NT Performs Thorough Optimization Without Rebooting System or Turning Off Other Services
Cupertino, Calif, August 2, 1999 - Symantec Corporation (Nasdaq: SYMC)
today announced Norton Speed Disk for Windows NT, the most efficient and
manageable NT optimization tool to keep servers and workstations running at peak
performance. Norton Speed Disk for Windows NT is the first utility to completely
optimize Windows NT volumes online without a system reboot. Easy to administer
via a centralized management console, Norton Speed Disk for Windows NT offers
corporations a unique, cost-effective solution for optimizing Windows NT drives
without requiring a system reboot and without turning off other services such as
anti-virus software. As a result, Norton Speed Disk for Windows NT maintains
system stability while improving system performance and throughput.
³Symantec has 15 years of experience delivering the most intelligent tools that
keeps systems running,² said Enrique Salem, vice president of Symantecıs Security
and Assistance Business Unit. ³Norton Speed Disk for Windows NT is the first and
only NT optimization tool that improves system performance by completely
optimizing NT volumes.²
³Windows 2000-ready solutions such as Norton Speed Disk for Windows NT are
definitely valuable for leveraging the power, security, and ease-of-use of the
new operating system and to maximize the performance of Windows 2000 systems,²
said Tod Nielsen, vice president, Developer Division Marketing, Microsoft
Corporation.
Subsequent releases of Norton Speed Disk for Windows NT are planned to be Windows
2000-ready. Companies who purchase Upgrade Insurance will receive the Windows
2000-ready version if it is released during the term of their Upgrade Insurance.
Other utilities on the market simply defragment Windows NT volumes, rearranging
the way the file content is organized so that the data in each file is stored in
contiguous disk clusters. Norton Speed Disk for Windows NT goes a critical step
farther and optimizes drives as well, arranging defragmented files in such a way
that your most important or frequently accessed files are at the beginning, which
makes those files more quickly accessible, saving you valuable time. As a result,
Norton Speed Disk for Windows NT results in significant improvements in system
performance.
³By standardizing on Norton Speed Disk for Windows NT on all NT workstations and
servers, PeopleSoft is taking a proactive approach to ensuring that these
mission-critical systems maintain a high level of performance. We couldnıt live
without it,² said Wes Clark, manager of Application Environments at PeopleSoft.
Norton Speed Disk for Windows NT is the first product able to completely optimize
Windows NT online without a system reboot. The product defragments and optimizes
directories, the Master File Table (MFT), page files, files and meta data. The
first time Norton Speed Disk for Windows NT is run, the utility arranges the
driveıs contents in the most optimal order. Once Norton Speed Disk arranges the
drives for optimal performance, each subsequent optimization is completed quickly
and efficiently.
Competitorsı products donıt provide the full breadth of capabilities in Norton
Speed Disk for Windows NT. These products donıt optimize the MFT or meta data on
or offline. In addition, they require systems to go offline through a reboot or
to halt other services such as anti-virus programs during defragmentation. Norton
Speed Disk for Windows NT optimizes online without a system reboot. As a result,
administrators can increase uptime and increase the performance of the system
without any system downtime.
Administrators can easily manage Norton Speed Disk from a central management
console using Norton System Center. Installation and updating, configuration and
lockdown, scheduling, event logging, alerts, and automated actions combine to
provide a comprehensive, out-of-the-box solution. Administrators can also
schedule Norton Speed Disk for Windows NT to save time and money.
Because Norton Speed Disk for Windows NT provides administrators a proactive tool
for monitoring and maintaining Windows NT system performance, it also helps
reduce calls to the helpdesk as users no longer experience unacceptable levels of
performance from their desktops and servers. Systems administrators, in turn, are
free to address more strategic issues and IS managers are able to more easily
maintain their Service Level Agreements. System optimization also results in
increased time and cost savings as administrators are able to use Norton Speed
Disk to leverage their existing Windows NT infrastructure investment rather than
simply buying, installing, and maintaining more disk space.
Pricing and Availability
Norton Speed Disk for Windows NT will be available in August. Site license
pricing for Windows NT Workstations is $33 per node for 100 workstations. Site
license pricing for Windows NT Servers is $249 per server for 10 servers.
