Norton SystemWorks 2.0 and Norton AntiVirus 5.0 Win 1999 World Class
Awards from PC World
Cupertino, Calif. June 9, 1999 - Symantec Corporation
(Nasdaq: SYMC), the world leader in utility software for business and personal
computing, today announced that Norton SystemWorks 2.0 and Norton AntiVirus 5.0
were honored by PC World with 1999 World Class Awards for best utility software
and best anti-virus software, respectively. The World Class Award winners were
announced in the July 1999 issue of PC World and will be presented with trophies
at an award ceremony to be held during PC Expo in New York.
"PC World is the publication of choice among managers who use and buy PC products
for business, and its subscriber base of more than one million readers clearly
indicates its leadership position in the high-tech industry. As a result, we are
pleased that its editors, testers, and contributors have singled out Norton
SystemWorks and Norton AntiVirus as World Class Award winning solutions," said
Enrique Salem, vice president of Symantec' Security and Assistance Business Unit.
Celebrating its 17th year, the respected World Class Awards honor the top
hardware, software, and Web products in the computer industry. To select the best
of the best, PC World's editors, testers, and contributors examined the entire
gamut of products that have appeared in the magazine over the past year. Hundreds
of products in 66 categories were judged on performance, value, consistency, and
innovation. The magazine also polled its readers to name the finest companies for
PC and software support, the top direct PC vendor, as well as the best
online/mail-order catalog.
"The World Class Awards are synonymous with the best products in the industry,"
stated Cathryn Baskin, editor-in-chief of PC World. "Throughout the year, we
search for the standout players in hardware and software for our readers. The
World Class Awards allow us to shine the spotlight on the outstanding products
and companies that have consistently proven to be top performers in the
marketplace."
Norton SystemWorks includes Norton Utilities, Norton AntiVirus, Norton
CleanSweep, Norton CrashGuard, and a six-month subscription to Norton Web
Services. Norton SystemWorks was designed specifically to provide consumers a
comprehensive, completely integrated and intuitive solution to keep their
computers operating at peak performance levels. Much more than a bundle, Norton
SystemWorks gives users everything they need in one box-one install, one product
update center, one manual, one support line, and one emergency disks set-all with
a single, easy-to-use interface.
Norton AntiVirus is the number one anti-virus software in the world. Norton
AntiVirus 5.0 is part of Symantec's suite of multi-tier virus protection products
designed to protect the enterprise at the desktop, server, Internet, and gateway
levels. Norton AntiVirus features numerous virus detection technologies to detect
new and unknown viruses, including Bloodhound and Bloodhound Boot heuristic
technology, Striker polymorphic virus detection technology, and the Macro Virus
Protection (MVP) system. Norton AntiVirus protects against infection at all virus
entry points, including shared floppy disks, the Internet, e-mail attachments,
and networks.
The PC World Class Award designations are the latest in a series of awards Norton
SystemWorks and Norton AntiVirus have earned this year. In May, Norton
SystemWorks was named PC Magazine Editors' Choice. In March, it earned a place on
Windows Magazine's respected WinList of recommended products, where it continues
to retain its place. Norton AntiVirus was named PC Magazine's Editor's Choice in
1998 for Best AntiVirus Utility for the fourth year in a row, PC World's Best Buy
for the second consecutive year, and PC Computing's A-List. In addition, Norton
AntiVirus for Lotus Notes was honored last year with Network Computing's rare
"Editor Refuses to Give it Back!" award-a seldom-given designation reserved for
products that provide exceptional reliability, performance, and usability.
