Caterpillar Selects Symantec to Provide Anti-Virus Solution
World's largest manufacturer of construction and mining equipment to deploy Norton AntiVirus across worldwide network
Cupertino, Calif --November 23, 1998-- Symantec Corporation (Nasdaq: SYMC) announced today
that it has been selected by Caterpillar, the world's leading manufacturer of construction and
mining equipment, diesel and natural gas engines and industrial gas turbines, to provide anti-virus
protection for its worldwide desktop network.
In May this year, Symantec and IBM announced an alliance in which IBM assigned its antivirus
customer base to Symantec and the two companies agreed to jointly develop and deliver a new range of
antivirus products under the Norton name. In September, Symantec also announced that it had acquired
Intel's anti-virus business and committed to serve Intel's 18,000 anti-virus customers. Symantec
also licensed a number of Intel's systems management technologies to incorporate into future
anti-virus solutions.
Caterpillar will deploy Norton AntiVirus to replace IBM antivirus software. The transition program
will begin in the first quarter of 1999.
Enrique Salem, vice president of Symantec's Security and Assistance Business Unit, adds:
"Caterpillar is a Fortune 500 company with representation in every major market in the world. Like
any large organization, ensuring that the corporate network is secure and free of viruses is
critical to success. Caterpillar is one of many highly valued corporate customers that rely on
Symantec's technology to protect their network. We are very pleased to be working with such a
prestigious organization."
