2006 Visionary Awards

Six 2006 Symantec Visionaries in total were recognized at Sydney Vision on September 5 and Seoul Vision on September 12 for translating technology innovation into tangible business value. The recognition of these six Visionaries was preceded earlier this year with the announcement of five Visionaries at Government Symantec Vision in Washington, D.C. and eight Visionaries at Symantec Vision in San Francisco, California.

At Singapore Vision on October 6, three additional Symantec Visionaries from the Asia South region were recognized by Symantec Group President of Worldwide Sales and Services Tom Kendra and Senior Vice President of Asia Pacific and Japan Bill Robbins: Tommy Hor, director of the computer centre at the National University of Singapore; Allan Ong, the assistant general manager of the MIS Group at Asia Pacific Breweries, Ltd.; and James Woo, head of information services at StarHub, Ltd.

More than 80 nominations worldwide have been submitted by the Symantec sales and services organizations in 2006. The nominations for the Asia South region were evaluated based on technology innovation, business value impact, and involvement of Symantec partners and services.

“IT organizations that translate technology innovation into tangible business value are the thought leaders of today and tomorrow,” said Tom Kendra, group president of worldwide sales and services, Symantec. “The Visionaries for the Asia South region are true technology visionaries, driving quantifiable results for each of their organizations.”

Information technology is a critical element to education and research for a global university with 28,000 students from over 80 countries. With a strong commitment to advancing knowledge and nurturing entrepreneurial talent, the National University of Singapore relies heavily on email, which serves as a primary communication tool connecting students, faculty, and staff. Faced with rapidly growing email volume and storage requirements, Tommy Hor, the director of the Computer Centre at National University of Singapore, and his team found it difficult to accommodate requests from end users for larger and larger storage quotas while avoiding new storage acquisitions. For help in designing and implementing an enterprise messaging management solution based on Symantec Enterprise Vault, Hor engaged Symantec Consulting Services. Supporting 35,000 mailboxes, the next-generation messaging solution is the largest Enterprise Vault deployment in the Asia-Pacific region to date. Some of the key results include as much as an 80-fold increase in email quotes, as well as the ability for students to retain email for the entire duration of their enrollment and university staff to do so for up to five years.

Assistant General Manager of the MIS Group at Asia Pacific Breweries and 2006 Symantec Visionary Allan Ong oversaw an IT strategy that centralized data protection on Veritas NetBackup and Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery, application performance management on Symantec i3 tools, and email archiving on Symantec Enterprise Vault. Though solution rollout to individual country operations is still in progress, Ong and his team are beginning to see tangible business results: recovery time improved more than 30 percent, system migration time was slashed by as much as 50 percent, and the time to migrate from Microsoft Exchange 2000 to 2003 was reduced substantially.
