How can I ensure all my devices are safe when travelling?
Make sure you've protected your laptop, mobile phone, PDA, digital camera and all other portable electronic devices.
- Laptop - Keep your laptop computer with you whenever possible. If you leave it in a car or hotel room, it's a sitting target for thieves. Make sure there's a password on your computer so if it does go missing, information can't readily be retrieved.
- Mobile - Minimise the amount of personal information (such as account numbers) and photos. Use a PIN for added security and disable roaming and other options like Bluetooth (wireless technology) when you aren't using them.
- PDA - Minimise the amount of confidential information they contain. Install an antivirus product to protect the device, and don't make your device readily visible to other Bluetooth systems.
- Digital camera - Regularly save your photos to your computer so if you lose your camera, you don't lose all your precious memories. Use security features such as passwords where available to protect your private pictures.
- USB keys - Consider security options such as encryption and passwords to ensure the data on your USB keys doesn't fall into the wrong hands.
Remember: Never store PINs, passwords or personal photos on any wireless or mobile device.
